What can we do to stop HIV/AIDS?

09/02/2017

1. Know your HIV status

  • You can find out by getting tested.
  • If you are HIV-positive, take ART. This significantly reduces the risk of HIV transmission.
  • If you're HIV-positive and pregnant, take ART as this significantly reduces the risk of your baby acquiring HIV. Breastfeeding can transmit HIV, so talk to your doctor about your options.

2. Stay HIV-negative

Sexual activity:

  • Know your partner's HIV status/tell your partner if you have HIV.
  • Use a new condom every time you have sex (anal/vaginal), especially if you don't know the HIV status of your partner.
  • Use water-based lubricants only. Oil-based ones can weaken condoms and cause them to break.
  • STIs can be transmitted through oral sex; use a non-lubricated, cut-open condom/dental dam.
  • Take pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) if you're around people who are vulnerable to HIV infection. PrEP is only available by prescription, and needs to be taken daily.

Drug use:

  • Use a sterile needle to inject drugs and don't share it with others.
  • If you absolutely must share equipment (although highly discouraged), thoroughly clean the given piece of equipment with bleach and water before each and every use.

Contact with blood:

  • Be careful when helping someone who is bleeding.
  • If you are exposed to blood, protect any cuts/open sores on your skin, as well as your eyes and mouth.
  • Use gloves, masks and other protective equipment.

Male circumcision:

  • Male circumcision can lower a man's risk of HIV infection.

3. Spread awareness

  • Be aware of how HIV/AIDS is spread, avoid high-risk behaviours and combat HIV complacency.
  • Sex education: understand the myths and facts of HIV/AIDS.
  • Host an event: spread awareness about HIV transmission and stigma, advocate for the rights of KAPs, raise money for HIV/AIDS relief efforts.
  • Donate to HIV/AIDS prevention causes.

What if I have HIV?

If you think you've been exposed to HIV, talk to your doctor as soon as possible and get tested. You may need to receive post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and if so, within 72 hours (3 days) of a possible exposure to HIV. If you suspect that you have contracted HIV from a sexual partner or transmitted HIV to a sexual partner, it is imperative that you contact your previous sexual partner and arrange an urgent appointment at a health clinic or hospital where tests can be performed.
